Adjustable Bases & Snore Detection- Active vs. Passive Features

Stop Snoring with the Help of an Adjustable Base

While most people snore at some point in their lives, millions of Americans suffer from chronic snoring, and several even suffer from a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Unfortunately, for those who snore often, it’s more than just a nuisance. Chronic snoring can make it difficult for you and your partner to get the sleep needed and lack of quality sleep is a serious problem.

Sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that causes breathing to shortly and frequently pause during the night, can be especially damaging to a good night’s sleep because those with the condition often wake up throughout the night. The good news is that there is something you can do to improve your sleep and limit or stop snoring. In fact, a simple, yet powerful solution is to invest in an adjustable base.

What Causes Snoring?

With snoring such a common complaint, many still don’t know why we snore and don’t understand how a base might help. Snoring happens when something prevents a person’s breathing to flow freely, whether the obstruction is in the nose or throat. When you can’t breathe smoothly, forced airflow causes the surrounding soft tissues to vibrate, which in turn causes that snoring sound.

People who snore a lot frequently have too much tissue in their nose or throat or have floppy soft tissues that are more prone to blocking the airway and vibrating. Several different things can cause snoring like genetics or weight gain, excessive drinking, or sinus problems, and it can also be caused by your tongue blocking your breathing. An adjustable base can help to combat snoring by helping to prevent airway blockages.

Elevating Your Head

For years, sleep experts have suggested elevating your head as a way to reduce snoring. By raising your head, you take pressure off your throat, your nasal passages open up, and your tongue and jaw are moved forward. All this can minimize snoring. An adjustable bed makes it easier than ever to elevate your head so that you can cut down on your snoring, allowing you and your partner to get a good night’s sleep.

In fact, today’s bases allow you to fall asleep elevated, have your partner adjust your position when snoring starts, or automatically detect your snoring and move you accordingly. A split adjustable base will even allow both of you to find the perfect position for your needs without having to affect how the other person is sleeping.

Avoid the Struggle with Pillows

Without an adjustable, many people resort to pillows to try to stop their snoring. However, propping yourself up with pillows is definitely not the perfect solution. When using multiple pillows, they can slip and change position as you roll over during the night. Plus. getting them to achieve a smooth angle without having your neck or a shoulder too high is very hard. Having to constantly readjust the pillows also disrupts your sleep, potentially just as much if not more than snoring. Plus, because you can’t totally control their position you might wake up sore.

What’s more, if you slide down off the pillows, you’re probably going to start snoring again. An adjustable base truly can’t be beaten, especially when the competition is a mass of uncooperative pillows.

Zero Gravity & Anti-Snore Positions

Another feature of the adjustable base is the ability to use zero-gravity and anti-snore positions. Also referred to as the neutral body position, zero-gravity was initially designed by NASA for astronauts but has been shown to offer several general wellness benefits. The anti-snore position was developed by adjustable base manufacturers and created to help sleepers find their way into the recommended sleep angle to avoid snoring.

When you set an adjustable bed to the zero-gravity position, your head and legs are elevated above your stomach. This can provide many benefits to the body by reducing pressure on the back, increasing blood flow, and taking pressure off of the heart. The zero-gravity position can also be beneficial for snorers, as, by providing better support and weight distribution to the body, it can actually help to open up your airways, which can limit snoring. While this sleep position can take some getting used to, you will quickly discover how it can transform your sleep quality.

For chronic snorers, finding relief from snoring can help to drastically improve their sleep quality while making it easier for their partner to get a good night’s sleep as well. Investing in an adjustable bed is a simple step that you can take to ensure that you get the best night’s sleep possible, as an adjustable bed makes it easy for you to find a sleep position that will reduce, or eliminate, your snoring. Bases with Automatic Snore Detection

There are a few models we carry that provide snore detection that will automatically hear your snoring and adjust its position to stop it.

One of the newer and top-selling options is the Tempur Ergo and Ergo Extend Smart bases. The Smart bases from Tempur-Pedic responds to snoring automatically using a sensor that connects to your base.

When your TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base senses snoring, it automatically adjusts the bed to raise your head to a position that can reduce snoring. The base will go up about 12 degrees in response to snoring.

Other adjustable bases require someone nearby to manually adjust the base with a remote or app when someone is snoring. The TEMPUR-Ergo & Ergo Extend Smart also tracks your heart rate, breathing patterns, and provides sleep insights.

With industry-leading sensing technology and real-time analytics, the Sleeptracker System is a fully integrated sleep system that offers all-night insight and customized coaching tips in the easy-to-use app so that you can find the best sleep ever. Plus, these smart bases are compatible with Google Assistant™ and Alexa, so you can use simple voice commands to adjust your base, get your daily sleep report, and view personalized sleep tips.

Another of our top brands that offers this type of active snore detection is Malouf. Within their Structures collection, the E455, M555, S655, and the S755 provide this feature. These bases also automatically detect snoring, and they offer user-configurable options such as length of time detected and bed position that you can set up through the app.

With these bases, you leave the Malouf app open at night and it uses your device’s microphone to detect snoring and will automatically raise the head portion of the bed to stop it. The app is available on both iOS and Android devices and can open on both partner’s devices to detect the snoring coming from either side.

One thing to remember with both of these brands is that if you have a split head queen or a split king or California king, either side can lift independently. Otherwise, the entire head portion of the bed will lift when snoring is detected.

Bases with Anti-Snore Positioning

The majority of the remaining bases we sell on the site offer some type of anti-snore positioning. This is considered a more passive form of snore reduction because the base doesn’t automatically change positions when it hears snoring. Instead, these bases provide a position, typically called anti-snore, that you can set the bed to when you fall asleep to prevent snoring. Or you can choose to move the bed into this position during the night if you hear your partner snoring or if you wake up snoring.

Pillow or neck tilt is another feature that can help to reduce snoring as well. This position only adjusts the area of the pillow but can be paired with upper inclines to create the most comfortable position for you or your partner. The top Reverie, Glideaway, and Leggett & Platt bases have this type of anti-snore positioning.
